Richenda Antoinette de Winterstein Gillespie, hija del Barón austríaco Winterstein Gillespie, apenas era una adolescente cuando empezó a acostarse con David Bowie, quien además le enseñó a tocar la guitarra. Grabó su primer álbum a los 15 años y en 1973, después de hacer coros en una de las canciones de Bowie, ambos grabarían juntos el álbum Weren't Born a Man. También fue novia por un corto periodo de tiempo de Donovan, Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page y Bob Dylan. Y es que Dana era una hermosa joven de generosos pechos, cualidad que atrajo a muchos músicos y que ella supo aprovechar para reciclarse en actriz cuando sus intervenciones en la industria musical no dieron el éxito que esperaba. En la actualidad, Dana tiene un grupo de blues, The London Blues Band, y organiza todos los años un festival benéfico de música en la isla caribeña de Mustique, en el que suelen participar sus antiguos novios famosos.
