Hija de una familia adinerada de Manhattan, Cleo Odzer comenzó su carrera como groupie a los 15 años en una discoteca de New York, donde solían tocar grupos como Cream y Deep Purple. Según ella misma declaró en una ocasión: "Cada dos semanas había una nueva banda y cada dos semanas tenía un novio nuevo". En aquella época, Cleo también tenía aspiraciones periodísticas que desarrolló escribiendo sobre la escena musical en un pequeño periódico, Greenwich Village. Ya en los 70, se dedicó a viajar por la India donde fue arrestada por contrabando internacional de drogas. Tras su paso por la cárcel, regresó a Estados Unidos, hizo un programa de desintoxicación de drogas y comenzó a estudiar una carrera en la Universidad, logrando doctorarse en antropología. Pero decepcionada con su nueva vida, regresó a la India y allí moriría en el 2001. Algunos aseguran que murió de un infarto y que su cuerpo fue cremado rápidamente, pero otros afirman que murió víctima del Sida y que su cuerpo permaneció en la morgue diez meses sin que nadie lo reclamara, hasta que finalmente fue enterrado en un cementerio de Mapusa, sin ceremonia alguna. Tenía sólo 50 años.
